From Our Home-Educating Family to Yours

For our family, home education is an amazing and inspiring way of life. It gives us lots of freedom, choices, quality time together, and opportunities to try different things and meet lots of interesting people. The home education community is a thriving, supportive and varied place, where families can come together for friendship, learning and sharing of ideas. All families will have their own way of navigating home education, with some choosing structure, some flexibility, and some in-between the two. There is no right or wrong way to do it, and there are so many choices, methods and styles to try. We aim for our resources to fit in nicely with your family’s choices, complimenting the methods you follow and enhancing your child’s learning. Over the last ten years we’ve tried many styles, from very structured, to very flexible, and now we’ve found a happy medium where we follow a routine for maths and literacy, and follow the children’s interests or offer inspiration for other subjects. Thank you for reading about our family! x

We Aim to Inspire Learning

Over the years, I found that the best way to get my children to really engage in their work was simply to use themes that interested them in order to inspire learning about other important subjects such as mathematics and literacy. I also found that they were more interested when a few different elements were involved, for example, on the personalised resource you see to the left (Your Home), the different elements are drawing, reading, writing, sticking, listening, marking, designing etc, and none are overwhelming. There are lots of little elements to keep a child’s interest and engagement, all within a sweet and magical theme that really grabs their attention and involves them within the resource. This is a recipe for successful learning!

Artwork

The illustrations on our resources are all hand-drawn using a Wacom art tablet. Many hours or sometimes even days go into creating them. They enhance our resources, breathing life into the words and the worlds we've created.

Writing

All written content on this website and within the resources is created by myself. Its purpose is to give depth and life to the themes that the resources are set in, whether it be the simple and sweet settings of The Fairylings Den with its poems and short stories, the fact-filled paragraphs of The Nature Study, or the detailed and immersive worlds of The Library of Myths. Magic & Mystery, and The Nova & Neo Letters. The writing is sure to leave your child wishing to know more about Luminosity's beautiful backdrops, characters and story-lines, learning lots along the way!

Design

All resources are carefully designed for ease-of-use, functionality and appeal, and are ultimately created to make the learning experience as enjoyable and fun for children as possible. We use lamination and sticky dots so that resources can be written on, drawn on and used time and time again, making our resources cost effective as well.

Read more about different learning styles below

There are many ways to learn in life, with certain styles being widely recognised and with many variations of those styles to suit different people. As a parent (whether your child is home-educated or schooled), it can be a huge advantage to find the style(s) that enable your child to learn the most effectively, benefiting them in many ways and allowing them to absorb new information in the most efficient and enjoyable way possible for them. Below are four of the most common and recognised learning styles for you to look at. Your child may have a preference for one, or might prefer to use elements from two or three, but the most important thing to consider is if the way they are learning suits them. For example, if your child seems to lean towards being a kinaesthetic learner, they may struggle with the style of read/write learning, because a kinaesthetic learner absorbs new information more effectively when the learning is hands-on, rather than reading long reports or writing lengthy essays. An auditory learner prefers to listen to instruction and audio information rather than watching videos and studying diagrams like a visual learner might. So you can see why it might be a good idea to recognise the learning style preferences for the benefit of your child. We hope that you found this information helpful, and for the visual learners out there, we’ve prepared a guide for you to take a look at below. 🙂
